D'Arcy Hildyard Water

An excellent location offering fly fishing for trout and winter grayling fishing. Also light lure fishing in certain locations. Beautiful surroundings, with multiple access routes for those who enjoy walking. It is well worth the effort.

members only - no day permit holders

Fly Fishing and Coarse Fishing

Any legal method allowed. All fish to be returned unharmed.

Beat length approximately 2.8 km (1.7 miles).

Species

Good numbers of Trout and Grayling. Also Chub and possibly Barbel.

Fly fishing.

This is great fly fishing water especially for right handed anglers.

Coarse Fishing

This part of the river is less suited to coarse fishing although the deeper water opposite Red House Farm at the top end of the beat offers the best chance. Fishing with light lures is also possible.

No night fishing!

Be prepared to show your EA licence to the farmer.

Stay near the river. Keep away from the lakes unless you are booked on.

Access

To get to the river you can follow the directions below or you can walk in from Easby or St Giles Farm. Alternatively walk over the Bailey Bridge from the north bank or park at Broken Brae and wade across. The latter should only be attempted in low water conditions and is entirely at your own risk.

Parking at the road side

Walk to the footpath signs

There is parking at the side of the road in the residential area.

Walk to the footpath signs

Walk to the footpath signs

Close to the parking area is a prominent sign for the coast to coast walk.

Go up the farm track

Follow the farm track, passing the farm on your left.

Go through the first gate

Immediately after the farm is a gate into a field. Close the gate behind you and walk uphill to the next gate. Go through it, closing it behind you and keep going staying on the track all the way.

The last gate

Steep track downhill

At the far side of the field you will arrive at another gate. This is the last gate. Go through and ensure  you close it behind you.

Steep track downhill

Steep track downhill

The track now goes downhill. It is quite steep. Turn left at the bottom and proceed to the river. As you face the river turn left to go to the top limit or right to head towards Broken Brae and eventually the Bailey Bridge which is the bottom limit.

It is a ten minute walk from the parking area to the river.

Some photos of the beat
