October 2021: Easby Access Improvements

  Easby Access Improvements, Pegs 6-8:

  • Access points are all clearly marked with red arrows
  • The access to the entrance at the old rail bridge is a lot better with the notice board lowered; barbed wire sprayed red so it is clearly visible.
  • The access to peg 5 from our stile in the field above peg 6 now has a path which is marked on the trees with red arrows.

The above actions have been completed by Peter Fietsch, a R&DAS committee member. Peter  has been working tirelessly to improve access to R&DAS waters. Peter’s dedication and hard work are appreciated by the committee and are for the benefit of all members. However, it is not fair or sustainable to rely on one person to undertake ongoing maintenance. There will be future communications on proposed work-parties to continue improvement actions; if you would like to pro-actively volunteer then please follow this link and provide your details:

September 2021: Land for Sale

Members may have noticed that land has been for sale, via agent Robin Jessop, along the Swale above Lownethwaite bridge, covering our Thorpe House Water. The sales prospectus very clearly stated that fishing rights are excluded from the sale.  Furthermore, our club secretary has contacted the selling agents and has been reassured that the fishing rights were not included in the sale and that access must be given to members of R&DAS.

July 2021: Access Improvements

One of our committee members has been working to improve access to our waters and recently completed the following works:

Station Bend and Fence End:

  • Peg 3 use the steps entrance
  • Access to peg 4 at Raines fence end cut out; use the the steps entrance or follow the footpath down the first fence line after the steps
  • All pathways have been strimmed.
  • Peg 6 bank entrance cleared of brambles and a seat has been made under the tree canopy on the tree roots using a couple of planks found on the bank

Brompton-On Swale:

  • Pathway down to pegs 33 to 29 along Skeeby beck have been strimmed as far as first pathway which branches off left to river on 33, so the path now runs along river side.

All members benefit from this work and we rely on unpaid volunteer members to do this for the benefit of everyone; if you are willing to help then please get in touch by following the link below to our contact page:

May 2021: Access to Mill Farm at Gilling West

In the very near future the access track at our fishery is due to receive its top coat of TARMAC this is likely to take three days. For the duration of this work our usual access will be closed.

If you arrive to fish and find work in progress we have agreed alternative access with Mill Farm via Waters Lane. Drive up waters Lane, go through the farm houses and park off the track on the grass near the bridge. Do not take your vehicle over the bridge, tarmac is being laid from the Hartforth Lane access right through to the farm. This alternative route can only be used for the days when work is in progress.

At the moment the dates we have are for the 5th – 6th & 7th May but this is dependent on good weather conditions.

April 2021: Wild Trout Trust (WTT) Report on R&DAS waters

The Wild Trout Trust (WTT) have published their report following site visits to R&DAS waters on the Swale between Mercury Bridge and Red House Farm and at Great Langton. This work was requested by the R&DAS committee so we can understand what is happening to the coarse fish population and potential actions that can be taken.

January 6 2021: Update on Cow Pasture Lake

We have been advised by Thornaby Angling Association (TAA) that stocking of Cow Pasture Lake has been delayed. Fly fishing for trout will start on 12th January. Details from TAA as follows:

  • 200 trout between 1 ½ lb – 2lb are being stocked
  • Fishing from 1st January to 31st March strictly fly only
  • Catch and release only for January and February
  • From March 1st, one trout per day can be kept
  • From 1st April, Cow Pasture reverts to an any method fishery and 1 trout per day can still be kept up until 30th November.
  • If this proves popular and successful we will continue this forward.

January 5 2021: R&DAS Waters Closed

In line with government rules for the latest Covid national lockdown, angling throughout England has been closed down (with effect from 5th January 2021). The Angling Trust is continuing to work with the government to see if a resumption might be possible. In the meantime, all Richmond & District Angling Society waters are closed until further notice. See https://anglingtrust.net/covid-19/ for latest updates.
